What Katy Did

I had read this book years ago. When I saw it on my audio book list, I decided to get reacquainted. Katy could always come up with a good scheme that would keep herself and her siblings occupied. The trouble was that they had a way of becoming so absorbed by the current activity, that someone was bound to do damage to their clothing or themselves. Katy often regretted the mischief after the event as she did want to be good. But the next day would find her up to her ears in something else. Aunt Izzie, their father’s sister, tried to keep them in order but her rules and fussing usually went in one ear and out the other. Altogether, Katy resented these restrictions, and as the children generally followed her lead, they too resented Aunt Izzie’s attempts to spoil their fun. Their Father, a Doctor, was often busy, and their mother had died a few years previously, so Aunt Izzie had many trials as she sought to keep all the children in one piece. One day, Katy decided to ignore one of Aunt Izzie’s firm instructions. If she had known “why”, (it was dangerous because something was broken) she probably would have found something else to do. But it wasn’t Aunt Izzie’s way to say why, she just expected obedience. So, when Katy got caught up in the pleasure the new swing gave her, it was a great shock when she soon found herself crumpled in a heap on the floor. The rest of the story carries on with the effect this accident had on Katy, the children, and the adults in the house. One lovely visitor, who truly knew how Katy felt to be laid up, helps her to begin to grow from the inside while her body was taking its time to recover. The reading was generally fine except for one whose accent made it difficult to understand.
